LOLER stands for the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. These UK regulations are designed to ensure that lifting equipment used in the workplace is safe, properly maintained, and operated by competent individuals.
LOLER applies to any business or organisation that uses lifting equipment—including care homes, hospitals, schools, and industrial settings.
Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER).
LOLER is a health and safety regulation that is specific to lifting equipment. All companies have a responsibility to ensure that all lifting is carried out safely. This is done through complying with LOLER regulations & by training staff on correct lifting techniques.
If your business have employees who operate lifting equipment at work you need to comply with these regulations. You should allocate a ‘competent person’ who is qualified to supervise all lifting operations.
Lifting equipment needs to be examined by qualified technicians and certified as fit for purpose. It is the responsibility of the business owner to make sure these inspections happen regularly.
All equipment must be labelled, tracked and dated in the appropriate manner. Any issues with equipment (faults) need to be logged with the relevant technician responsible. It should be clarified that a LOLER inspection is not the same as routine maintenance such as routine inspections, replacements and adjustments.
If you own or operate any lifting equipment, you must comply with these regulations.
PUWER stands for the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
